Hello Fellow Health Club Operators,
A doorstop is a doorstop! It is not a dumbbell, Bosu Ball, piece of newspaper, piece of cardboard, a bucket, a cone, a rock, a weight plate or any other item convenient. Good design for doorstops is letting them stop doors and hold doors open. I feel bad for the door stop not getting to do it’s job while we replace it with so many inferior substitutes that aren’t nearly as good. My suggestion and recommendation is to let the doorstop do it’s thing. Let’s let all the other items do what they do best and not insult them with asking them to be something they weren’t built to be or do…
It’s been an interesting year for Jill Kinney, Bill McBride, and Carey White. In January, Kinney, the cofounder of Club One, Inc., a prominent and highly regarded San Francisco–based chain, joined with McBride, the company’s former president and COO, and Carey White, its former CFO and CTO (chief technical officer), to embark on a new journey. Their goal was to work, with the help of equity partners, to acquire the assets of Club One, and launch a new lifestyle brand focused on the local communities and client site environments the firm planned to serve.
Petaluma, CA 12/26/13: Bill McBride, former President of Club One & last year’s Chairman of the IHRSA Board of Directors and Jill Kinney, founder of Club One have teamed up to launch a club brand called Active Sports Clubs. The flagship club is a 40,000 square foot location in Petaluma California and additional sites are expected to be open in 2014. The leadership team includes CFO/CTO Carey White, formerly with Club One and Ken Brendel, accomplished Club One and Itrim General Manager to become General Manager of the location in Petaluma. Bill McBride serves as the President and CEO and is responsible for all aspects of the operations and Jill Kinney will serve as its Chairman.
Luck? Hard Work? Or Both?
Recently, I’ve found myself fascinated by social/economic books—those of the Outliers, Tipping Point, and Super Freakonomics genre—which involve a conversation about talent, timing, and luck. My question: Is success the result of luck or hard work?
While it’s true that much of life involves chance events—things that are out of our control—I think the importance people place on luck, or the lack of it, speaks volumes about their general outlook.
A couple of years ago, my friend, industry veteran Mitch Wald, suggested using the “luck” question in job interviews, so I began to ask candidates, “Are you lucky?”
